First symptoms can include trouble gripping, tripping, general clumsiness, and in some cases, slurred speech. As the disease progresses, it takes away a person’s ability to walk, speak, move, swallow and breathe, usually in just a few years. There is no known cause, no cure, and no effective therapies.
