Sogetsu Massachusetts Branch will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a Demonstration by Tetsunori Kanawa on Friday, October 12 beginning at 9:30 am at NewBridge on the Charles, Dedham, near Exit 17 off Route 95. Mr. Kawana has been engaged in the study and transformation of Sogetsu Ikebana for over 30 years, Hiroshi Teshigahara, the renowned artist, film director and third headmaster of Sogetsu inspired the artistic spirit and vision that continue to guid Mr. Kawana. He has ventured beyond classic Sogetsu ikebana art into the realm of large scale bamboo installations (see below, from denver.about.com), stage design, and exhibition design. his numerous private exhibitions, installations and demonstrations in Asia, Europe and North America have taken ikebana far beyond its Japanese origins. Through his workshops Kawana Sensei has conveyed his passion and deep understanding of Sogetsu ikebana to may practitioners, leading them into a richer and more profound world. In 2002 Mr. Kawana gave a demonstration in Boston that was an artistic tour de force. The arrangements ranged from whimsical to cutting edge to inspiring. In 2007 he worked with members of the Boston chapter that was part of its New England Flower Show display. His creations have graced botanical gardens, museums, department stores, and palaces all over the world. The public is invited to attend ($20 each, Mass branch members free) by pre-registration prior to September 15.
