The Garden Club of the Back Bay

Saturday, March 24, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – 2nd Annual Gardening Book Swap

16th March 2012

Saturday, March 24, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm – 2nd Annual Gardening Book Swap

Is your bookshelf overloaded with gardening books? Does it include books you haven’t looked at in years, or maybe ever? Are there other titles you wish you had, or are you thinking of trying something new in your garden and would like to read up on it? Come to the 2nd annual Tower Hill Library Gardening Book Swap on Saturday, March 24, from 10 – 4, at 11 French Drive in Boylston.

How does it work? Very informally! You cull gardening books and journals in good condition from your collection and bring them to the Tower Hill Library; then you look through the materials others have brought and choose a few you can use. You get to clear out things you no longer need and get something new (to you at least)! What could be better?

Please contact the Library (508-869-6111 x116) if you have any questions or wish to arrange drop offs before Saturday, March 24th. Free with admission ($12 adults, $9 seniors, $7 youth). For directions, visit www.towerhillbg.org.

Plant a Magnolia

Beautify your home and your neighborhood. The Garden Club of the Back Bay is celebrating its 50th anniversary by planting 50 magnolia trees in the Back Bay. We’re calling the project “50 for 50.”

The Garden Club of the Back Bay has been helping our neighbors plant magnolia trees for almost our entire history. In 1963, Laura Dwight led the first magnolia planting along Commonwealth Avenue, creating the spectacular display of pink blossoms we still enjoy today. In 1995, we oversaw a second planting of more than 40 young ‘Leonard Messel’ magnolias, augmenting Back Bay’s spring display of flowering trees.

In 2012-2013, we will celebrate our 50th anniversary by sponsoring the sale and planting of 50 ‘Moon Glow’ white magnolia trees. These specially grown nursery trees will be about 7′ tall when they arrive. Because these trees were purchased in bulk, they are available at a special, discounted price of $500 per tree, which includes planting by an arborist. The actual retail value is nearly double that price. The trees will be planted in the spring of 2013.

Just 50 trees will be available for sale. The club will arrange for an arborist to plant the trees in front gardens with an open site. The club will also subsidize the planting of magnolias in other open sites in the neighborhood.  To view our brochure and print an order form, click here.

Thursday, March 8, 7:00 pm – Moby-Duck: The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea

When Donovan Hohn heard of the mysterious loss of thousands of bath toys at sea, he figured he would interview a few oceanographers, talk to a few beachcombers, and read up on Arctic science and geography. Hohn’s accidental odyssey pulls him into the secretive arena of shipping conglomerates, the daring work of Arctic researchers, the lunatic risks of maverick sailors, and the shadowy world of Chinese toy factories. Moby-Duck is a journey into the heart of the sea and an adventure through science, myth, the global economy, and some of the worst weather imaginable.

Donovan Hohn is the recipient of the Whiting Writers’ Award, a 2010 NEA Creative Writing Fellowship, Hopwood Awards in essay and poetry, and a Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Ocean Science Journalism Fellowship. His work has appeared in Harper’s Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, and Outside, among other publications. His January 2007 cover story for Harper’s was included in The Best Creative Nonfiction, Vol. 2, and received honorable mention in The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2008. A former English teacher, and a former senior editor of Harper’s, he is now the features editor of GQ. He lives in New York with his wife and sons. Moby-Duck is his first book. Saturday, March 3, 4:00 pm – An Everlasting Meal

Join Porter Square Books, 25 White Street in Cambridge, for an author signing and meet and greet with Tamar Adler, author of An Everlasting Meal, this Saturday, March 3, beginning at 4 pm.

“An Everlasting Meal is beautifully intimate, approaching cooking as a narrative that begins not with a list of ingredients or a tutorial on cutting an onion, but with a way of thinking…. Tamar is one of the great writers I know—her prose is exquisitely crafted, beautiful and clear-eyed and open, in the thoughtful spirit of M.F.K. Fisher. This is a book to sink into and read deeply.”
Alice Waters, from the Foreword

“In this beautiful book, Tamar Adler explores the difference between frugal and resourceful cooking. Few people can turn the act of boiling water into poetry. Adler does. By the time you savor the last page, your kitchen will have transformed into a playground, a boudoir and a wide open field. An Everlasting Meal deserves to be an instant and everlasting culinary classic.”
Raj Patel, author of The Value of Nothing

Tamar Adler is a former editor of Harper’s Magazine, the founding head chef of Farm 255 in Athens, Georgia, and cooked at Chez Panisse from 2007-2009. Her book has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Magazine, the Irish Times, the San Francisco Examiner, among other publications. Her writing has appeared in Harper’s Magazine, The New York Times, The New Leader, Mother Jones, Huffington Post, Fine Cooking, Salon.com, Gilt Taste, the Atlantic.com, and more. Tamar lives in Brooklyn, NY.

The event is free. For more information, telephone 617-491-2220, or email ellen@portersquarebooks.com.

Wreath of the Day 2011 – Happy New Year

Our final wreath of the day for this season is one of the volunteers’ favorites.  The mosaic mirror “disco ball” ribbon was the inspiration for a wild, Saturday Night Fever design which sparkles on a door between Fairfield and Gloucester on Marlborough Street, should you be walking by.  We wish you all a very happy New Year, filled with joy, and look for more “wreath talk” next autumn.

Wreath of the Day 2011 – Billing and Accounting

As December progresses, The Garden Club of the Back Bay wreath project wraps up with the final submission of expenses to our intrepid Treasurer, and a final mailing of bills to last minute wreath buyers who didn’t get their payments in with their orders.  We rarely have had any collection problems, but sometimes we do have to send out gentle reminders once or twice – December and January can be hectic, we know.  Once we reconcile the accounts, we’re on to our next projects – this year the Twilight Garden Party, which will raise funds for our 50 for 50 Magnolia planting celebrating our fifty year history with the planting of fifty magnolia trees throughout Back Bay.  We’ll be reporting on this in the coming months, but right now our focus remains tying up all loose ends to finish our 2011 wreath project with a healthy profit.   Every cent of net revenue goes right back into the community, so we like to know how much we have to spend.  Below is a pretty wreath with a burgundy bow that looks ready to go out for New Year’s Eve.
